Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>In a shocking speech on Friday, the president of Spain\u2019s football federation refused to quit for kissing a female player while celebrating the World Cup victory.<\/p>\n

Luis Rubiales was widely expected to step down during an emergency meeting of Spain\u2019s football federation. Instead, he insisted he was the victim of a witch-hunt, gave lessons about \u201creal feminism,\u201d and vowed to take legal action against Spanish politicians for accusing him of misconduct.<\/p>\n

Last Sunday marked a triumphant moment for Spain\u2019s women\u2019s football team as they won the World Cup for the first time. But the victory was soon mired in scandal after Rubiales grabbed the face of midfielder Jennifer Hermoso and planted a kiss on her lips during the celebrations.<\/p>\n

In the locker room, Hermoso said she did not enjoy the kiss but could not avoid it. Through her union, she later released a statement condemning his behavior.<\/p>\n

Rubiales, however, said that \u201cthe peck, not a kiss\u201d was consensual. \u201cShe was the one who hugged me … that\u2019s the truth,\u201d he said, insisting that it had nothing to do with \u201cdesire or domination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubiales was also filmed grabbing his genitals as a means of celebrating the women\u2019s victory. During the vulgar move, he was standing next to Queen Letizia of Spain and her 16-year-old daughter Infanta Sofia. He apologized for that on Friday.<\/p>\n

He said he was looking at coach Jorge Vilda and made the gesture to honor the coach\u2019s \u201cballs\u201d for winning. \u201cWe\u2019ve gone through so much … they wanted to do the same to you as they did to me,\u201d Rubiales said, referring to last year\u2019s attempt by the female players of team Spain to force Vilda to resign.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve suffered a lot. We\u2019ve been through a lot,\u201d Rubiales said, looking at Vilda, later saying he was giving him a raise to \u20ac500,000 a year and ensuring he would remain the coach of the women\u2019s team for the next four years.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen were champions too, it wasn\u2019t just women,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rubiales also ranted against \u201cfalse feminism\u201d that does not seek the truth but instead tries to get him fired. He said he would take legal action against Spanish ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, for accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior.<\/p>\n

Pressure on Rubiales<\/b><\/p>\n

Facing mounting criticism from Spanish politicians and the media, Rubiales released a remorseful video on Monday. \u201cWe saw it as something natural, normal, and not in bad faith, but there are people who have been hurt by this, and I have to apologize. There\u2019s no other way, is there?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

A day later, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the apology did not go far enough and that the scandal shows Spain \u201cstill has a long way to go in terms of equality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reports also emerged that Rubiales pressured Hermoso, the player he kissed, to appear at his side in the apology video.<\/p>\n

The next day, Hermoso\u2019s union Futpro released a statement in her name, saying it condemns \u201cconduct that violates the dignity of women\u201d and vowed to ensure such acts “do not go unpunished.” Amnesty International, Spanish politicians and the women\u2019s soccer league Liga F added to the pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the greatest achievements in the history of Spanish sport was tarnished by the shameful behavior of the highest representative of Spanish football,\u201d said Liga F. \u201cIt is an unprecedented international embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, not only did FIFA open disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales, but Spanish minister Felix Bolanos announced that the government would intervene if Rubiales retained his position as Spain\u2019s football chief.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s football community reacts<\/b><\/p>\n

In the wake of his controversial speech, members of Spain\u2019s football community began speaking out on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is unacceptable. It\u2019s over. I\u2019m with you Jenni Hermoso,\u201d tweeted Alexia Putellas, who played on Spain\u2019s winning team and has won several of the top prizes for being the world\u2019s best female player.<\/p>\n

Several other high-profile Spanish women\u2019s football players, including those who refused to continue playing on the national team because of the toxic situation, also backed her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re with you Jenni. It\u2019s a shame that it\u2019s had to come to this point for people to believe our complaints,\u201d tweeted footballer Nerea Eizagirre.<\/p>\n

Male players also spoke out. While star player Iker Casillas called the speech \u201ccringey,\u201d member of Spain\u2019s national team Borja Iglesias said \u201cwearing the Spanish jersey is the best thing that\u2019s ever happened in my career… but I\u2019ve made the decision not to return to Spain’s national team until things change.”<\/p>\n

Rubiales\u2019 long-time nemesis, Javier Tebas, president of Spain\u2019s La Liga, also did not mince his words. \u201cHis trick of playing the victim has worked too many times, but this time it\u2019s simply ridiculous. It is impossible to attribute his misogynistic and despicable behavior to any absurd plot,\u201d Tebas tweeted, adding that \u201cthe list of men and women who have been wronged by Rubiales over the years is too long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Rafael del Amo, president of the Women\u2019s Football Commission within the Spanish football federation, also announced he was stepping down.<\/p>\n

Javier Landet, head of the Basque Country chapter, also sent in his resignation.<\/p>\n

One of the only voices that voiced support for Rubiales was Luis Enrique, former head coach of Spain\u2019s men’s team. He said his management was \u201coutstanding\u201d and that he\u2019s \u201cadmitted his mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the speech, members of the government and Superior Sports Council (CSD) said they would take urgent measures to try and oust Rubiales.<\/p>\n

Not his only scandal<\/b><\/p>\n

Rubiales was elected president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation in 2018, and his crude celebrations were not the only controversy of his tenure.<\/p>\n

In one of his first actions, he fired Julen Lopetegui, the head coach of Spain\u2019s men\u2019s team, a day before the 2018 World Cup in Russia.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the Spanish daily El Confidencial published leaked documents and audio files that included conversations between Rubiales and Gerard Pique \u2013 a former Barcelona player and Shakira\u2019s ex-partner. The conversations suggested that the two agreed to split millions of euros to take Spain\u2019s Supercopa tournament to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

That case is still under investigation, and he is also accused of other misconduct.<\/p>\n

During his speech on Thursday, Rubiales said the \u201cdozens\u201d of complaints and allegations against him were all invented as part of the witch-hunt against him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to kill me,\u201d he said of so-called \u201cfalse feminists\u201d and the press, which he accused of being biased against him.<\/p>\n
