Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Due to critical fuel crisis which has severely hampered transportation systems and mobility, organisers have postponed the Cape Maclear Carnival Fitness Fiesta, which was due for this weekend.<\/p>\n

A public notice from the organisers informs partners, ticket holders and participants that they are currently working on rescheduling the carnival for November 24-26 and asks ticket holders to contact 0999 913 972 for refunds or credit.<\/p>\n

The organisers are on a mission to resuscitate the lakeshore tourism industry, saying since the CoVID-19 pandemic, Malawi tourism \u201chas faced dire economic upheaval\u201d while the situation has also been compounded by the subsequent Cyclone Freddy disaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cChembe Village, which hosts many lodges, artisans and tourism businesses \u2014 including the neighbouring Lake Malawi National Park \u2014 has been heavily impacted,\u201d says the public notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Fitness Fiesta is a united community effort to attract interest from the cities, government and the corporate sector to revive the tourism economy and boost livelihoods of the people of this unique and vibrant lakeshore location.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Fitness Fiesta has on board various activities, such as cultural parade, live music, DJs, theatre, cultural dances (gule), yoga, workshops, vocational training, cocktails, food displays, half marathon (21.1km), middle distance (15\/10km)and fun run (5km).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, all is set for the Blantyre City Arts & Cultural Festival tomorrow at which the country\u2019s music giants, Skeffa \u2018The Jamming Machine\u2019 Chimombo and and Malawi\u2019s hip hop artist, TayGrin will headline music performances alongside a dance troupe from Zimbabwe, Apama Arts.<\/p>\n

According to its Facebook page, Apama Arts is an arts & media group that specializes in product advertisements, dance & music and poetry \u2014 all being what\u2019s on the menu of performances by Malawians at the Blantyre City Arts & Cultural Festival.<\/p>\n

Under the theme of \u2018Celebrating Arts, Culture & Unity to Promote Participatory Municipal Management\u2019, the festival will be spiced up with a street carnival from the Civic Centre to the Upper Stadium.<\/p>\n

Activities at the main venue include exhibitions mounted in pavilions and food stalls showcasing cultural products, clothing, medicines\/herbs and cultural narration and there will also be performances by cultural dances troupes, drama\/comedy, visual arts and the live band performances.<\/p>\n

Blantyre City Council is hosting the event in association with Blantyre Arts Festival (BAF) for a coordinated cultural heritage, which will start from 08:00am-17:00pm.<\/p>\n

Announcing the rebranded of the two institutions\u2019 separate festivals, taking cognizance that both Blantyre City Council and BAF aim for a common purpose Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dennis Chinsewu said the objective of the festival \u201cis to give residents a platform where they can engage and be sensitized on the municipal services provided by the Council through arts and culture\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlantyre City has over the years faced rapid urbanisation and high population growth that have resulted into a diversity of people from different cultural divide residing, doing business and visiting the City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis, therefore, calls for a coordinated cultural heritage in the context of National and Global agenda. As such, the Council wants to revamp and sustain its arts and cultural affairs arm of governance agenda by re-introducing arts and cultural festivals, which are celebrations of the traditions of particular tribes of people or place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe overall objective of revamping and sustaining the Festival is to contribute to national efforts of enriching arts and cultural heritage in Blantyre City.\u201d<\/p>\n

Specifically, Chinsewu said they aim to achieve the following objectives:<\/p>\n

* To entertain, educate and inform residents, visitors and the general public about arts and culture that is prevalent in Blantyre City from past and present and moving into the future.<\/p>\n

* To engage residents, visitors and the general public to appreciate and embrace arts and cultural activities as they contribute to development.<\/p>\n

* Promote trade and investments in various goods and services that are related to culture in Blantyre City.<\/p>\n

* To promote unity amongst residents, visitors and the general public by instilment of cultural tolerance.<\/p>\n

Chinsewu added: \u201cBlantyre City Arts & Cultural Festival has been designed to capture relevance, purpose, inclusion and timing. The event is mainly outdoor, hence is ideally held during dry months of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo capture inclusiveness, this festival will be free for all, except for those with food and none food stalls to sell traditional food, drinks and cultural items, who will be charged a small fee.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that five knowledge domains have also been captured in the design in order to sustain the festival, which include administration, design, publicity, operations and risk domain.<\/p>\n

He took cognizance of the involvement of stakeholders in Blantyre City\u2019s development endeavours as one of the key elements of its programmes\u2019 successes over the years, saying: \u201cIn many previous events, stakeholders (corporate partners) have played different significant and positive roles, such providing financial, material and technical support while others have entered into specific partnerships with the Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlantyre City Arts & Cultural Festival will take the same approach as stakeholder engagement has always been Blantyre City Council\u2019s usual success strategy in programme design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a way of investment promotion, the Council finds the Arts & Cultural festival to be another important platform for engagement with private sector, civil society and other well-wishers who would play a major role in the programme life-cycle as they also harness both tangible and intangible benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n

For this year, the festival other stakeholder partners include Waste Advisors; Globe Internet; DEC Construction Company; Mapeto David Whitehead and Malawi Gaming & Lotteries Authorities (MALGA) but Chinsewu still appealed from support from corporate and other organisations.<\/p>\n

On his part, BAF\u2019s founder and Executive Director, Thom Chibambo \u2014 who have been organising their own version of arts festival since 2009 \u2014 said they were proud to partner with the City Council as the better way forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI call this partnership as a milestone because all along, we have always worked with Blantyre City Council when we organised our festivals since 2009,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur relationship is not new but now its a milestone as we plan to make it even much better going forward as we will take a leaf from this forthcoming mega festival.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, BAF has managed to spice their festivals with foreign artists such as Mutabaruka from Jamaica, Salif Keita from Mali and Rebecca Malope from South Africa.<\/p>\n

Last year, bearing in mind that climate change is affecting the whole world \u2014 Malawi not being exceptional \u2014 BAF celebrated the 2022 festival under the theme; \u2018Climate Resilience Through Cultural Preservation\u2019, which held at Njamba Freedom Park.<\/p>\n

Several amenities are provided at festival venues that include all health and security precautions by the Police services and other security agencies; mobile toilets; hand washing water buckets; sanitation and volunteers who collect litter.<\/p>\n
