Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Chief Resident Magistrate Dalitso Chimwaza on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, ordered the South African government today to pay US$467 (about MK560,000) as costs for delaying the court process in the ongoing extradition case involving Shepherd Bushiri and wife, Mary Bushiri.<\/p>\n

The cost, which is going to the lawyers for Prophet Bushiri, is supposed to be paid before December 11, when the matter reconvenes for South Africa to parade the witnesses.<\/p>\n

The ruling follows the application by South Africa to adjourn the matter due to logistical challenges. Magistrate Chimwaza expressed disapproval of South Africa in the way it continues to flout the procedures.<\/p>\n

The chief resident magistrate therefore adjourned the case to December 11, 2023, hearing a case in which the South African government wanted Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary to be extradited there to answer some court charges.<\/p>\n

Bushiris lawyer Wapona Kita said his client was happy with the directive by the court although they were prepared to ask questions to the state witness, Sibongire Mnzinyathi who is Director of Public Prosecutions from South Africa.<\/p>\n

Senior state advocate Dzikondianthu Malunda on the other hand said the Government will abide by the court order to pay for the costs but was quick to say that the state was happy that the court has allowed their prayer for the adjustment.<\/p>\n

The adjournment follows a request by the state which asked the court to give them not less than 21 days to prepare for the case since they accessed some case documents from South Africa late. The matter will convene on December 11.<\/p>\n
