Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>As the country is still experiencing fuel shortage, Malawi will completely go out of the commodity due to the druck drivers\u2019 strike which is currently underway on their salary increase.<\/p>\n

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer, Henry Kachanje told the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, that 40 trucks are stuck in the country\u2019s borders as truck drivers are on strike to force truck owners to adhere to their call.<\/p>\n

Kachanje said the trucks are keeping 1.5 million litres of fuel which was supposed to sustain the country\u2019s fuel crisis. Echoing the same, National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), Public Relations Officer, Miclas Reuben said that currently, fuel debt is pegged at US$56million<\/p>\n

He said the country\u2019s fuel price is meager and is the primary factor of debt accumulation. Chairperson for the Committee, Welani Chilenga said the biggest challenge in the fuel package is the availability of forex.<\/p>\n

Chilenga therefore urged authorities to resolve drivers\u2019 issues for easy fuel transportation. \u201cIt is a national importance issue and every stakeholder involved should come together to solve the situation,\u201d said Chilenga. Malawi is in a food, fuel, and forex crisis which President Lazarus Chakwera\u2019s Tonse Alliance Government is unable to fix three years in power.<\/p>\n
