{"id":57769,"date":"2024-01-31T22:31:04","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T22:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/malawi\/?p=57769"},"modified":"2024-01-31T22:31:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T22:31:04","slug":"maize-prices-104-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/malawi\/all-news\/maize-prices-104-higher","title":{"rendered":"Maize prices 104% higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>A maize market report by International Food Policy Research Institute (Ifpri) has shown that Malawi\u2019s maize pric\u00ades in July 2023 were 104 percent higher than during the corresponding period last year.<\/p>\n<p>The report further shows that Malawians are paying the highest price for the staple food as compared to other countries such as Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Mozambique in the Southern African region.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, maize prices jumped by 27 percent from K512 per kilo\u00adgramme (kg) in June to K650 per kg in July, the steepest monthly increase this year.<\/p>\n<p>Ifpri says traders attributed the surge in price to multiple factors, including fuel scar\u00adcity, which led to higher transport costs, im\u00adpacting overall prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the government\u2019s directives on clearance on importation of maize, this in\u00ad crease may be due to the fact that while most traders remained unaware of this development, those who were aware still incurred additional expenses in\u00advolved in crossing the bor\u00adder with maize from Zam\u00adbia and Mozambique,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p>It adds that between late June and late July, Chir\u00adinga Market in Phalombe District experienced the highest increase in weekly average maize retail pric\u00ades, with a notable surge of 49 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can be attributed to the scarcity of maize in the area, coupled with high demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConversely, the North\u00adern Region experienced the smallest growth in prices (and even a small decline in Karonga), thanks to har\u00advest being only recently completed there,\u201d the re\u00adport says.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ifpri, re\u00adtail prices of maize in se\u00adlected markets in Malawi remained the highest in the region at the official ex\u00adchange rate of K1,060 to the United States Dollar.<\/p>\n<p>The report says Mo\u00adzambique has consistently offered the lowest pric\u00ades compared to Malawi\u2019s neighbouring countries, making it the preferred option to source maize for most traders in Malawi\u2019s Southern Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, due to the higher maize prices in the Central Region of Mala\u00adwi compared to Zambia, some Zambian maize trad\u00aders residing near the border have also favoured Malawi as their selling market of choice,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sam Kawale<\/b>Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale has said the government is set to start selling maize through the Agricultural Develop\u00adment and Marketing Cor\u00adporation (Admarc) from Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kawale, however, kept a tight lid on the price at which the State-owned grain marketer will make the commodity available to the market. \u201cYes, we are targeting cyclone-hit areas and we said we will start Thursday [today].<\/p>\n<p>As we speak, the min\u00adistry, through Admarc, is work\u00ading on logistics, transport and personnel to be ready. \u201cWe might not do all mar\u00adkets in one day but we will start this week.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that we also work hand-in-hand with the Treasury for resources but the two ministries [Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Finance] are working together. The selling price will be an\u00adnounced soon,\u201d Kawale said.<\/p>\n<p>Sources at the Ministry of Agriculture confided in The Daily Times that the ministry is contemplating to price the grain at around K400 per kg, translating to K20,000 per 50 kg bag.<\/p>\n<p>But Kawale could neither confirm nor deny the reports, saying: \u201cWe will communi\u00adcate\u201d.
