Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The World Bank has thrown its weight behind the $490 million (approximately K833 billion) package to go, towards the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Programme (SSRLP).<\/p>\n

World Bank Programme Leader for Human Development in East Africa, Aneesa Arur, said Monday that the bank is impressed with the impact of the project on Malawi. The initiatives in question include the Social Cash Transfer and Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen the environment being restored and trees being allowed to regenerate. We have seen households becoming economically independent through funds they are getting after being involved in community work. This is a good thing and has to be sustained,\u201d Arur said.<\/p>\n

She further commended the Government of Malawi for putting in place strategies that are helping beneficiaries build resilience to challenges including climate change.<\/p>\n

Currently, each household targeted under the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme is getting K28,000 per month, with some households using the funds to buy livestock.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe World Bank will work with the Government of Malawi to increase the amount of money following the devaluation of the local currency.<\/p>\n

On her part, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning Director of Poverty Reduction and Social Protection, Kate Langwe, told The Daily Times that a technical team has already met to set a new amount which beneficiaries will be getting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is remaining now is for the higher committee to approve the amount and other new things by the end of this month so that the new rate should come into effect,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
