Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has increased sponsorship for the 2023 Fam Women\u2019s Football League by 32 percent to K79 million from K60 million.<\/p>\n

The association announced this in a statement Wednesday ahead of the start of the preliminary regional leagues this weekend. Initially, the league was slated to kick off on July 29.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted to announce that the discussions that mainly focused on increasing the value and competitiveness of the league in support of the professionalisation agenda have been very fruitful,\u2019\u2019 the statement reads.<\/p>\n

Following the increment in sponsorship, the champions at national level will pocket K8 million from K3 million whereas the runners-up will receive K4 million from K2 million.<\/p>\n

The third and fourth-placed team will now get K2 million and K1.5 million from K750,000 and K500,000, respectively. At regional level, the champions will get K4 million from K2 million whereas the runners-up will pocket K1.5 million from K1 million.<\/p>\n

Third and fourth-placed teams will get K1 million and K500,000 from K500,000 and K 250,000, respectively. That is not all, prizes for individual awards have also been adjusted upwards to K200,000 from K100, 000 at national phase and K100,000 from K50,000 at regional level.<\/p>\n

National Women\u2019s Football Association (NWFA) President Adelaide Migogo felt honoured with the sponsorship increment. \u201cWe expect to watch competitive games this year. There is a lot at stake. This is what we wanted and we are very happy,\u201d Migogo said.<\/p>\n

Football pundit Parly Chinyama commended Fam for the increase. \u201cWe have received this news with excitement. For women\u2019s football to grow, there\u2019s a need for more resources; at the same time the corporate world will see this as an opportunity to partner Fam.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts with the owners to put more resources before players put their hearts and efforts into the game. Big up to Fam,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Silver Strikers Ladies (formerly DD Sunshine) Coach Andrew Chikhosi said his troops will come back stronger this season after last year\u2019s poor performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to reclaim our lost glory in women\u2019s football. We have beefed up the squad and we are ready,\u2019\u2019 Chikhosi said.<\/p>\n

Ntopwa Women redefined the country\u2019s women\u2019s football landscape after they won the 2022 Fam National Championship following a 5-4 victory over Ascent Soccer after 1-1 stalemate in regulation time. The Fam Cup winners will represent Malawi at the 2023 Caf Women\u2019s Champions League\/ Cosafa Qualifier slated for Durban, South Africa.<\/p>\n
