{"id":61639,"date":"2024-07-09T12:43:32","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T12:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/malawi\/all-news\/regulator-weighs-terrorism-financing-risk-among-ngos"},"modified":"2024-07-09T12:49:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T12:49:07","slug":"regulator-weighs-terrorism-financing-risk-among-ngos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/malawi\/all-news\/regulator-weighs-terrorism-financing-risk-among-ngos","title":{"rendered":"Regulator weighs terrorism financing risk among NGOs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The Non-governmental Organisations Regulatory Authority (Ngora) has said it is still compiling a report on an assessment it conducted regarding terrorism risks among NGOs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The authority undertook the assessment earlier this year to determine if any NGO is vulnerable to exploitation by terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Friday in Mzuzu during a media engagement on the NGO Act and initiatives Ngora is pursuing, public relations officer Lucy Bandazi said through the exercise, the government aims to verify whether NGOs are benefitting from terrorism financing.<\/p>\n<p>Bandazi said the assignment also focused on whether the NGOs are being used to support terrorism activities elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the assessment phase has been completed and that what remains is to analyse and compile the final report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe conducted an assessment among the NGO sector and we are still compiling the results of that assessment. Soon, we will publish a report on the findings,\u201d Bandazi said.<\/p>\n<p>Ngora states that terrorism financing on an international level is a significant concern, with some terrorists viewing non-profit organisations as conducive to their operations.<\/p>\n<p>Bandazi added that the law requires all registered NGOs to ensure that their licences are renewed annually and that they submit financial reports.<\/p>\n<p><b>ZIMBA\u2014We need to be vigilan<\/b>tEarlier, the regulator\u2019s chief executive officer Edward Chileka Banda said while they cannot conclude that NGOs are benefitting from terrorism financing, Ngora observed that some NGOs were not transparent in their financial dealings.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Steve Zimba of Zodiak Broadcasting Station said the meeting was enlightening as it provided insight into Ngora\u2019s background, achievements and challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, as journalists, need to be vigilant in reporting from an informed perspective.
