Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Principal Secretary for irrigation engineer Geoffrey Mamba has cited limited private sector participation in activities as a significant challenge impeding the growth of the animal industry in Malawi.<\/p>\n

Mamba made the remarks on Thursday during the official opening of the state-of-the-art Ekhaya abattoir located in Mpemba, Blantyre.<\/p>\n

He then described the state-of\u2013the-art facility as key to boosting economic activities while contributing to the attainment of the country\u2019s long-term development goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch investments align with our national goals under the ATM [Agriculture, Tourism and Mining] Strategy and the overarching Malawi 2063 agenda, contributing to economic growth and job creation,\u201d Mamba said.<\/p>\n

On her part, Chief Executive Officer of Ekhaya Group of Companies Anabel Mpinganjira assured Malawians of quality meat products that would be produced at the facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have met all regulatory requirements, prioritising health, quality and standards throughout our processes,\u201d Mpinganjira said.<\/p>\n

Thomson Mpinganjira, who is chairperson for the group, encouraged Malawians to engage in livestock production to enhance economic activities in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest challenge we face in Malawi is the availability of livestock; there are not enough people rearing animals, resulting in inadequate supply to meet market demand. While demand is high, our supplies remain limited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The construction of Ekhaya Abattoir, which covers 2.1 hectares, began in 2021 and the facility has the capacity to accommodate approximately 150 to 200 live animals at a time.<\/p>\n
