Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>After parliament\u2019s appeal for the reinstatement of the 997 rapid response line following Dr. Victoria Bobe\u2019s fatal shooting at Chigumula in Blantyre, Police have reintroduced the line to tackle crime.<\/p>\n

Alfred Chinthele, deputy spokesperson for the national police, announced to local media that the 997 response line will be implemented in a phased manner, starting with Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba, Mzuzu, and Kasungu districts.<\/p>\n

Chinthele noted that the rapid response line, which was abolished nearly a decade ago due to resource constraints, has been reestablished.<\/p>\n

In a recent parliamentary session, Felix Njawala, UTM\u2019s Mwanza Central Parliamentarian, requested that Peter Mukhito, the Minister of Homeland Security, reconsider introducing the 997 police rapid response toll-free line to reduce crime rates.<\/p>\n

Njawala made the remarks following concerns raised by parliamentarians regarding a horrific incident last week in which unknown individuals stormed a house at 11 o\u2019clock and shot and killed the lecturer and gynecologist at her Chigumula home.<\/p>\n

Legislature for Blantyre City Soche Zingwangwa Penjani Fredo\u2019 Kalua raised the urgent matter in parliament under standing orders, describing Dr. Bobe\u2019s untimely death as a loss to Malawi and the medical and health sector.<\/p>\n

In response, Minister of Homeland Peter Mukhito promised to consider reinstating the 997 toll-free number.<\/p>\n
