Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>Malawi\u2019s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Charles Mhango, has warned beneficiaries of government relief items against selling the assistance, describing the practice as unacceptable and punishable by law.<\/p>\n

Mhango issued the warning on Saturday at Iponga Primary School Ground during the distribution of relief maize to disaster-affected families from Traditional Authority Mwakaboko in Karonga District.<\/p>\n

He said both sellers and buyers of government relief items will be dealt with according to the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President of the Republic of Malawi, Arthur Peter Mutharika, clearly stated that no Malawian should die of hunger. Therefore, selling donated relief items goes against the will of His Excellency and those involved must be brought to book,\u201d said Mhango.<\/p>\n

Member of Parliament for Karonga Songwe Constituency, Mungasulwa Mwambande, expressed gratitude to the sitting President for responding promptly to the needs of Malawians affected by disasters.<\/p>\n

He described the President as a visionary leader who understands the challenges facing the people.<\/p>\n

However, Mwambande raised concerns over the shortage of fertilizer under the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP) in his constituency.<\/p>\n

He said fertilizer stocks have run out while maize crops are growing rapidly, urging government to urgently supply more fertilizer to enable farmers to redeem and use it in their fields.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Senior Chief Mwakaboko commended government for the timely distribution of relief maize, noting that many households in his area are facing serious food shortages.<\/p>\n

He appealed for additional support and suggested that traditional leaders should be given authority to help identify genuine beneficiaries of relief assistance.<\/p>\n

Recently, about 71 households in Traditional Authority Mwakaboko were affected by heavy rains. The maize distribution forms part of government\u2019s response to the disaster.
