Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>The United Transformation Movement (UTM) President, who once served as a Reserve Bank Governor under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, Dalitso Kabambe, has opposed the Malawi government\u2019s decision to raise fuel prices as part of efforts to stabilise the economy, arguing that the move will worsen the cost of living for ordinary Malawians.<\/p>\n

Kabambe shared his views on his Facebook page, where he said higher fuel prices increase transport costs and food prices, placing more pressure on households already struggling with high living expenses.<\/p>\n

His remarks, however, attracted strong and mixed reactions from social media users, many of whom questioned his consistency on the issue.<\/p>\n

Several commenters recalled previous interviews in which Kabambe suggested that fuel prices would have to rise because there was no alternative.<\/p>\n

Marko Kumwenda referred to an interview with journalist Brian Banda, saying Kabambe had earlier told Malawians to expect fuel price increases because there is no other choice.<\/p>\n

Justin Mofolo also accused the UTM leader of changing his position now that he is in opposition, linking on the same interview.<\/p>\n

Some commenters described the statement as confusing.<\/p>\n

Davie Takula Kambalame and Leonard Dzonzi said Kabambe\u2019s current remarks contradict his past statements, making it difficult for the public to understand his position.<\/p>\n

Others challenged Kabambe to explain what alternatives he is proposing if raising fuel prices is not the solution.<\/p>\n

Edward Mwamadi said Malawians want clear and practical ideas, not general statements, while Ventino Mk urged him to present workable solutions.<\/p>\n

A few commenters noted that fuel pricing is a complex issue.<\/p>\n

Prosper Zembereko argued that keeping fuel prices low can sometimes lead to shortages and the growth of black-market trading, which also harms consumers.<\/p>\n

Fuel prices remain one of Malawi\u2019s most sensitive economic issues, as any adjustment quickly affects transport fares and the prices of basic goods.<\/p>\n

As a former central bank governor, Kabambe\u2019s comments continue to attract public attention and scrutiny.<\/p>\n
