Tech Breakthroughs: A Path for Africa’s Self-Reliance

By Roxette Mikela Pazvakavambwa

Africa-Press – Malawi. What has garnered intense attention from Western technological powers, led by the United States, is neither military confrontation nor geopolitical rivalry, but China’s consistent, steady progress in breaking the long-standing Western-dominated global technological monopoly through unwavering commitment to innovation and technological self-reliance.

For Africa — a continent long trapped in technological dependency, plagued by exorbitant monopoly pricing, unilateral technological restrictions, and unfair international tech rules — China’s landmark technological breakthroughs represent far more than just China’s own development accomplishments.

They stand as a beacon of hope and a valuable reference for Global South nations striving to break free from technological subjugation and pursue independent development.

These advancements are dismantling the old hegemonic global technological order and unlocking tangible opportunities for sovereign, sustainable development across Africa and Zimbabwe.

First, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has put an end to the long-standing near-total dominance of the US GPS in the global navigation market.

Boasting high-precision positioning capabilities, BeiDou has been adopted in over 200 countries and regions, serving more than one billion users worldwide.

In the Middle East, Asia and Africa, numerous countries have integrated BeiDou into critical sectors including energy development, transportation infrastructure and disaster monitoring, effectively reducing over-reliance on a single satellite navigation system.

For Zimbabwe and other African nations, BeiDou holds vast application potential in precision agriculture, land resource management, cross-border logistics and emergency disaster relief.

It provides stable, politically neutral technical services, eliminating the vulnerability that leaves developing economies at risk of sudden disruptions to positioning services.

Second, China’s indigenous large passenger jet C919 has introduced a competitive new option to the global civil aviation market, challenging the decades-long duopoly of Boeing and Airbus.

The C919 has secured more than 1,200 global orders, earning wide acclaim across Asia, Africa and Latin America for its exceptional cost-effectiveness and flexible cooperation frameworks.

For generations, African countries have been burdened by exorbitant procurement costs and rigid after-sales terms imposed by Western aircraft manufacturers.

The global promotion of the C919 helps drive down regional aviation operation costs, boosts cross-border connectivity within Africa, and offers cooperation entirely free of political strings attached, better aligning with the practical development needs of developing nations.

Third, breakthroughs in chip and storage technologies have alleviated the pressures of the global semiconductor monopoly.

Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), for instance, has achieved pivotal technological advances in 3D NAND flash memory, driving down global SSD market prices.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s renewed, steady progress in chip design has compelled Western semiconductor manufacturers to adjust their long-standing pricing strategies.

For years, African markets have grappled with prohibitively high semiconductor costs and inadequate localized technical support services.

China’s pursuit of technological self-reliance in this field has proven that breaking technological dependency is entirely feasible, opening new avenues for China-Africa cooperation in chip application, digital infrastructure construction and professional talent cultivation.

Fourth, China’s self-developed UOS operating system has been widely deployed in government affairs, finance and other key national sectors, effectively bolstering cybersecurity and data sovereignty.

Adopted by Chinese government agencies, state-owned enterprises and financial institutions, UOS has reduced reliance on foreign operating systems and mitigated the risks of data backdoors and unauthorized information leakage.

For Zimbabwe and African countries, building independent, controllable operating systems is a foundational step to protect national data sovereignty and ensure the security of government governance and financial operations.

China’s successful practice provides a replicable, feasible model for Africa to enhance digital security and achieve digital autonomy.

Fifth, localized production of high-end medical equipment has made quality healthcare services more accessible worldwide.

Chinese medical device manufacturers such as United Imaging Healthcare have supplied CT scanners, MRI machines, radiotherapy equipment and other core devices to dozens of countries, delivering reliable quality at reasonable costs and forcing Western competitors to lower their inflated prices.

Across Africa, many primary medical facilities are unable to afford expensive Western medical equipment.

Chinese medical devices effectively cut procurement and maintenance costs, helping Zimbabwe and the broader African continent strengthen public health systems and improve grassroots healthcare services.

Sixth, new energy vehicles (NEVs) and power battery technologies are leading the global transportation energy transition, ending a century of Western dominance in internal combustion engine technology.

Chinese enterprises led by BYD have secured global competitiveness in power battery research and vehicle manufacturing, accelerating the expansion of the global NEV industry.

Africa is endowed with abundant lithium, cobalt and other critical mineral resources for new energy development, yet has long been confined to the role of raw material exporter.

China’s mature NEV industrial chain facilitates deeper China-Africa cooperation in mineral deep processing, technology transfer and industrial capacity cooperation, enabling Africa to transition from a raw material supplier to an active participant in the global new energy supply chain.

Seventh, China’s self-developed OceanBase database has broken Western monopoly in the high-performance database sector, leading the world in data processing efficiency and financial transaction system stability.

Major Chinese commercial banks and digital financial platforms have widely adopted this domestic database to enhance financial data security and independent control.

With the rapid growth of digital finance and mobile money services across Africa, secure, efficient and low-cost database systems powered by Chinese technology can support the robust development of local fintech industries, reduce foreign technological dependency and strengthen regional financial resilience.

Eighth, China’s indigenous industrial design software has broken Western monopoly in core industrial software.

Solutions such as ZWCAD have supported the R&D and manufacturing of high-end equipment including tunnel boring machines, while significantly reducing software usage and licensing costs.

African industrialization has long been constrained by exorbitant Western industrial software prices and prohibitive licensing fees.

The maturation of Chinese industrial software enables effective technology transfer and localized talent training for Africa, laying a solid foundation for Zimbabwe’s manufacturing upgrading and the continent-wide industrialization drive.

Ninth, the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) provides a diversified, secure alternative for global trade settlement, serving as a valuable complement to the existing international payment system.

Covering most countries and regions across the globe, CIPS supports direct cross-border currency settlement, reducing systemic risks arising from over-reliance on a single currency and payment system.

For African nations, CIPS helps mitigate risks from U.S. dollar exchange rate volatility and unilateral financial sanctions.

It enables direct settlement between local African currencies and the Chinese yuan, cuts cross-border trade transaction costs, and strengthens national economic sovereignty.

Tenth, hybrid rice and salt-tolerant crop technologies safeguard global food security and challenge the international seed monopoly.

Led by the research team of Yuan Longping, Chinese agricultural scientists have developed high-yield, stress-resistant crop varieties adaptable to diverse African climatic conditions, significantly boosting crop yields in saline-alkali and arid regions.

Many African countries are plagued by chronic food shortages and heavy reliance on costly imported foreign seeds.

Chinese hybrid rice and drought-resistant crop technologies provide direct, practical support for Zimbabwe to increase grain output, advance food sovereignty and achieve agricultural self-sufficiency.

Eleventh, innovative Chinese social media platforms have enriched the global digital ecosystem, prioritising user experience and community value.

These platforms have gained growing popularity among young users worldwide, offering a more inclusive, equitable digital space for individual users and small and micro enterprises.

African content creators and micro-entrepreneurs have long been marginalized by algorithmic biases on Western social platforms.

Chinese social media platforms open up new channels for them to showcase local African cultures and expand cross-border e-commerce businesses.

Twelfth, independent innovation in defense technology underpins the protection of national sovereignty and security.

China’s self-developed aircraft carriers, ballistic missiles and other high-end defense equipment embody a fundamental truth: genuine national sovereignty must be built on a foundation of technological and security independence.

This lesson is equally critical for African countries: economic and political independence can never be separated from technological and defense self-reliance.

These 12 technological breakthroughs are not merely simple replacements of foreign products; they mark a historic shift toward a multi-polar, diversified global technological landscape.

For far too long, the Western-led global technological system has been defined by monopoly pricing, arbitrary unilateral restrictions and deliberate technological barriers, confining developing countries to a state of passive dependency.

China’s development journey conclusively proves that innovation is not the exclusive privilege of Western nations, and that technological self-reliance is both an attainable goal and an imperative for the Global South.

What makes China’s technological achievements even more commendable is that they have been accomplished amid long-standing containment and suppression from the United States, encompassing stringent restrictions on chip exports, software supply and high-tech cooperation.

Blocked from accessing core Western technologies, China turned external pressure into a powerful driving force for indigenous innovation and self-reliance, ultimately securing decisive breakthroughs in key technological fields.

As China’s all-weather friend and longstanding reliable development partner, Zimbabwe has every reason to embrace and celebrate China’s technological successes.

China’s progress is not solely a win for China—it is transformative good news for Zimbabwe and Africa, expanding our development choices, strengthening South-South cooperation, and bringing us closer to achieving genuine independent development.

The most invaluable lesson for Zimbabwe and Africa is unequivocal: technological hegemony is not permanent, and a development path rooted in external dependency has no future.

Through deepened South-South cooperation, equitable technology sharing and win-win industrial collaboration, Africa can forge an independent, sustainable and self-determined path of technological and industrial growth.

China remains a long-term, reliable development partner for Zimbabwe and all African nations.

As all-weather friends with a shared future, our destinies are inextricably linked.

China’s technological breakthroughs create unprecedented opportunities for Zimbabwe’s industrialization, food security, digital sovereignty and economic transformation.

Existing cooperation in BeiDou application, digital payment, medical equipment, agricultural technology, new energy and industrialisation has already delivered tangible benefits to people’s livelihoods.

This cooperation is entirely free of political preconditions and unsustainable debt burdens, guided by the principles of equality, mutual respect and common development.

Going forward, Zimbabwe and African nations can seize the historic opportunities brought by the evolving global technological order, deepen practical cooperation with China in livelihood-oriented technology, digital economy, food security, industrialization and financial sovereignty.

By accelerating technology introduction, professional talent training and localized technology adaptation, Africa can build an independent development path that suits its own conditions.

A new, more equitable and inclusive global technological order is taking shape, and Africa is poised to embrace its rightful place in this transformative new era.

*Roxette Mikela Pazvakavambwa is an independent commentator focusing on industrial policy, international trade, cultural differences, and macroeconomic strategies.

Source:
