Africa-Press – Malawi. <\/strong><\/span>UN Resident Coordinator, Maria Jose Torres, has ended her tour of duty in Malawi. Torres, who finished her tenure Friday, took leave of President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thank Torres for her years of service to Malawi and wish her well on her new assignment,\u201d Chakwera said.<\/p>\n

In the past four years, Torres has led the UN system in support of Malawi\u2019s efforts to achieve national development priorities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

According to a press statement signed by Phillip Pemba, Development Coordination Officer in the UN Resident Coordinator\u2019s Office, Torres has applauded the great cooperation between Malawi and the UN in multiple areas of work.<\/p>\n

These include food security, disaster response, Covid-19 response, climate action, elections, gender equality, girls\u2019 education, human rights and governance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am delighted to see Malawi\u2019s vision to become a middle-income country by 2063 and the robust partnerships created with the national institutions, the civil society and the Development Partners,\u201d Torres is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UN is fully engaged to ensure we leave no one behind in accelerating efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Malawi,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Torres said promoting multisectoral approaches in line with the recently launched Malawi 2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) would be essential to undertake transformative initiatives and consolidate gains on climate action, agro-industry transformation, urbanisation and pushing for the digital agenda.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith stronger determination, commitment, concerted efforts, and a whole-of-society approach, it is possible to achieve the SDGs in Malawi. It will take everyone\u2019s contribution,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n

She also thanked development partners for the support they have rendered to the UN system. Torres started her mission in Malawi in January 2018 and her last day of work in Malawi was Friday.<\/p>\n

One of the areas which the UN system is supporting Malawi in is social welfare and Minister of Gender Patricia Kaliati has described Torres as a person who became Malawian. She said Torres as an accommodative policy implementer when it came to elimination of gender-based violence and early marriages.<\/p>\n
