Africa-Press – Mali. Morocco won 2-1 against Guinea in the opening match of the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations (June 24- July 8), Saturday, at the Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat.

Algassime Bah opened the scoring with a free kick 45 minutes into the first period.

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli equalized in the 68th minute from a penalty. The FC Barcelona player (Spanish elite), on loan to Osasuna, will score twice on a second penalty, at 90e mn +8.

Guinea equalized a minute later, but the goal was disallowed by the referee for a foul on the Moroccan goalkeeper, after viewing the VAR.

This fourth edition of the CAN U23 continues on Sunday with the matches: Ghana-Congo at 3 p.m., Egypt-Niger at 5 p.m. and Mali-Gabon at 8 p.m.

CAN U23 is a football competition created by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It is held every four years and is a qualifier for the Olympic Games for the first three teams.

The first edition, organized in 2011 in Morocco, had consecrated the coronation of Gabon.

Senegal hosted the 2015 edition, won by Nigeria.

Egypt won the last edition organized in 2019.

Morocco hosts for the second time the competition in which eight teams participate.

Here is the composition of the groups:

Groupe A : Maroc, Ghana, Congo, Guinée

Groupe B : Égypte, Mali, Gabon, Niger

Le Sénégal a été éliminé par le Mali lors du dernier tour des éliminatoires de la CAN. Les Lionceaux s’étaient imposés, 3-1, à Dakar, avant de perdre, 3-0, à Bamako.
