Africa-Press – Mali. The Senegalese men’s basketball team won Monday in Lagos against Nigeria, 93-87, during the first day of the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament for the African zone. .

Absent from the basketball world cup scheduled for September 25 to 10 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, the Lions will have to fight to win the only qualifying place for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the end of the Lagos tournament.

The Lions, led by Mamadou Gueye aka Pabin in the absence of head coach Ngagne De Sagana Diop, led 46-44 at halftime. They set the pace in the fourth quarter when they widened the gap a bit, leading by ten points at times.

This tournament, held in Lagos, now includes six teams, after the packages of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

The Senegal team will face that of Mali, for its second match, Thursday at 5 p.m. GMT.

The pre-Olympic qualifying tournaments concern 38 teams that are not qualified for the World Cup. Eight in Africa, eight others in the American continent, eight in Asia, as well as sixteen in Europe.

The five winners of each tournament will participate in the FIBA ​​Olympic Qualifying Tournaments scheduled for July 2024.
