Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Commissioner for Agriculture of Rodrigues, Mr Richard Payendee, paid a courtesy call, today, on the Minister of Agro-industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, at the seat of his Ministry at the NPF Building, in Port-Louis.

In a statement, Minister Gobin underlined that discussions focused on the importation of cattle for breeding purposes from Rodrigues to Mauritius, which was limited due to the detection of swine fever in goats and sheep in Rodrigues.

He said that the meeting was held to take stock of the evolution of the situation since their last meeting held in September 2020. The Minister indicated that following the detection of swine fever in goats and sheep in Rodrigues, samples were sent to Montpellier Laboratory in France in order to elaborate an action plan and manage the outbreak.

Furthermore, a Technical Committee also met following which a temporary ban on importation of sheep and goats was imposed. In the light of updated information, Minister Gobin pointed out, it has been decided that the ban will be lifted and importation of cattle will restart with goats and sheep for the purpose of breeding.

For his part, Mr Payendee expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its initiatives to continuously improve the agro-industry sector of Rodrigues notably through the ongoing efforts to ease the importation of cattle from Rodrigues through the replacement of micro-chipping by the tagging of cattle, among others.
