Africa-Press – Mauritius. A swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Human Rights Division of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mrs Marie Lourdes Lam Hung, was held, this afternoon, at the State House, Réduit, in the presence of the President, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun.
In a statement after the ceremony, Mrs Marie Lourdes Lam Hun, stated that she is honoured to be appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Human Rights Division of the NHRC.
She said that she will do her best to protect and promote the rights of all Mauritians and the citizens of the Republic. Furthermore, the newly appointed Deputy Chairperson highlighted that she will focus more on environment rights since human rights and the environment are intertwined.
Human rights cannot be enjoyed without a safe, clean and healthy environment, and sustainable environmental governance cannot exist without the establishment of and respect for human rights, she added. The National Human Rights Commission
The National Human Rights Commission was established in 2001 under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1998 to deal with violations of human rights, mainly civil and political rights, entrenched in Chapter II of the Constitution and with complaints against the Police.
The NHRC is also engaged in the promotion of human rights through education. In 2012, important changes were made to the structure of the NHRC, whereby three divisions were created, namely: a Human Rights Division, a Police Complaints Division, and a National Preventive Mechanism Division.
In 2016, Parliament enacted the Independent Police Complaints Commission Act to create a new statutory body, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). In April 2018, the functions of the Police Complaints Division were entrusted to the IPCC leaving the NHRC with two Divisions.
