Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, today in Port Louis, between Ebony Forest Ltd and the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security. Its main aim is to formalise the collaboration between both entities and define the responsibilities and obligations of each party involved in the establishment of viable breeding populations of endemic fauna species.
Signatories were the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Medha Gunputh, and the Director of Ebony Forest Ltd, Mr Owen Griffiths. The Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, and other personalities were present at the signing ceremony.
Minister Gobin highlighted that his Ministry is pleased to sign an MoU with Ebony Forest Ltd and seized this opportunity to convey his words of appreciation to the team working on conservation projects.
He reminded that his Ministry values partnerships with stakeholders of the private sector and Non-Governmental Organisations such as Ebony Forest Ltd and Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, among others.
Moreover, he underscored that his Ministry looks forward to having a close collaboration with other private sector stakeholders as far as fauna and flora conservation efforts are concerned, be it in Mauritius or on its islets.
For his part, Mr Griffiths commended the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security for the confidence placed in Ebony Forest Ltd. He observed that he and his staff are all passionate and knowledgeable about conservation but that nothing can be done without a close relationship between Ebony Forest Ltd and the parent Ministry.
This MoU will allow Ebony Forest Ltd to translocate endemic fauna to achieve the final number for a viable population to Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel and Vallée De L’Est within the provisions of the MoU and without causing any prejudice to the source population.
As for the Ministry, it will contribute and support these translocations, through the National Parks and Conservation Service (NPCS), provided availability of resources (human and other facilities); and allow research and monitoring of the fauna by Ebony Forest Ltd.
Furthermore, Ebony Forest Ltd will, through this MoU, allow research and monitoring by NPCS of the populations of the endemic fauna translocated, as well as promote education and awareness on endemic fauna conservation at Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel in schools and with the public at large.
