Africa-Press – Mauritius. The first of May marks the International Labour Day dedicated to workers and labourers. This day celebrates labourers and their achievements as well as encourages them to be aware of their rights. A wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate Labour Day was thus held, this morning, at the Stele of Anjalay Coopen in Cottage.
The Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, and other personalities laid wreaths to pay homage to the memory of this key figure who advocated for workers’ rights.
Representatives of several Trade Unions were also present for this solemn ceremony. It is recalled that Mrs Anjalay Coopen was among the three sugarcane workers killed on 27 September 1943 at Belle Vue Harel Sugar Estate at a time of protests against working and living conditions.
The other sugarcane workers were Mr Kistnasamy Mooneesamy, and Mr Moonsamy Moonien. A fourth labourer, Mr Marday Panapen, died of bullet wounds a few days later.
