Africa-Press – Mauritius. A delegation from Rodrigues, headed by the new Commissioner for Child Development, Family Welfare, and Women’s Affairs, Ms Marie Christine Agathe, called on the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, in Port Louis, today.
Following the meeting, the Minister stated that the visit had enabled the sharing of ideas, a review of projects initiated, as well as discussions on avenues of collaboration. Improving responses in the fight against domestic violence and enhancing the protection of children were high on the agenda of the meeting.
Mrs Koonjoo-Shah underscored that Rodrigues, as part of the Republic of Mauritius, should implement the measures and policies intended for the development of the country and welfare of the people.
The Minister pointed out, too, that Rodriguan women entrepreneurs would be invited to participate in the upcoming consultations process on women entrepreneurship.
Moreover, Mrs Koonjoo-Shah highlighted the need for the recommendations of the Technical Committee on Child Pornography, which had recently completed its Report, to be effectively executed in Rodrigues.
For her part, Ms Agathe deemed the discussions fruitful, and underlined that areas of common ground for collaboration had been identified. She added that particular attention was given to projects geared towards the welfare of women, children and families.
The Women’s Affairs Commissioner also announced that the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, would be effecting a mission to Rodrigues, soon, to carry out an appraisal of the plans put in place following the discussions in Mauritius.
It is noted that a copy of the National Gender Policy 2022-2030 was remitted to the Commissioner with a view for Rodrigues to pursue the right course of action towards gender equality, as elaborated in the Report.
