Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth, is taking part in the work of the Commonwealth Summit which opened this Friday, June 24, 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.
In the absence of Queen Elizabeth II, the Head of the Commonwealth, it was Prince Charles of Wales who officially opened the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) 2022.
The President of Rwanda, Mr. Paul Kagame, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Mr. Boris Johnson, and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Ms. Patricia Scotland, also addressed the leaders of the 54 member countries of the Commonwealth during the opening ceremony.
“Our Commonwealth family, which includes both the world’s most vulnerable and wealthy nations, has the ability, indeed the obligation, to be a force for the global public good,” said the Prince of Wales in his speech.
He welcomed the fact that several third countries have expressed the wish to join this organization which brings together for the vast majority of the former colonies of Great Britain.
“As we recover from the pandemic that has devastated so many lives; as we respond to climate change and biodiversity loss that threaten our very existence; and as we see lives destroyed by violent forces.
. such friendships are more important than ever,” he continued. After the opening ceremony, proceedings were devoted to the election of a new Secretary General of the Commonwealth.
Heads of State and Government will meet at the end of the afternoon in Executive Sessions to continue discussions on the theme of CHOGM 2022 which is “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming”.

They will meet in retreat on Saturday, June 25. The 54 member states – including 32 island states – that make up the Commonwealth together have a population of 2.5 billion people worldwide.
