United Nations Environment Programme’s representatives meet Minister Koonjoo-Shah

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A delegation from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), led by UNEP’s Ag. Deputy Executive Director, Ms Sonja Leighton-Kone, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah, yesterday, at the Newton Tower in Port Louis.
Discussions focussed on gender equality and women’s empowerment as these are recognised as cross-cutting priorities across all aspects of UNEP’s work.

UNEP promotes men and women’s participation in all environmental protection and sustainable development activities. In addition, gender is a key component central to the vision of UNEP for the 2030 Agenda and its contribution to the decade of action.

Some key United Nations conventions and agreements which provide the global mandate for achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment were also on the agenda.

They are, among others: the United Nations Charter (1945); the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (1979); the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development and Agenda 21; the Millennium Development Goals; and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals.

UNEP Medium Term Strategy 2022-2025 The Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) outlines that UNEP will strengthen institutional capacity for gender-responsive programme delivery.

In the period 2022-2025, UNEP will leverage the opportunities provided by the Sustainable Development Goals to strengthen the institutional capacity of policymakers, UNEP staff and key partners to develop and implement gender-responsive policies and strategies.

UNEP will thus enable access to information on development and implementation of gender-responsive environmental policies and strategies, and strengthen strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in order to secure commitments and collective gender-transformative actions so as to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
