Africa-Press – Mauritius. An Ayurvedic garden was inaugurated, today, at the Lady Sushil Ramgoolam Mediclinic in Belvedere in the context of Ayurveda Day 2022 observed annually on 23 October.

The theme for this year is Har Din Har Ghar Ayurveda. The event is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Association of Ayurvedic Physicians and the High Commission of India.

On the occasion, the Ministry of Agro Industry & Food Security launched a comic book series entitled ‘Professor Ayushman’ and donated fifty medicinal plants.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal; the Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin; the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo; the Deputy High Commissioner of India, Mr Vimarsh Aryan; and other personalities were present.

In his address, Minister Jagutpal pointed out that Ayurveda is perceived as one of the most ancient and well documented system of medicine equally relevant in modern times.

Ayurvedic medicines, he said, help keep the human body free from diseases and physiological pain as well as promote mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and holistic wellbeing.

The main aim of Ayurveda is the prevention of disease and promotion of health, he added. The Minister indicated that the AYUSH Centre of Excellence, a state-of-the-art traditional treatment centre, will be set up at Cote d’Or with the help of the Government of India.

He thanked the Indian Government for their collaboration in the setting up of the centre which aims to be a reference in traditional medicine and AYUSH in the African region. He urged the population to take benefits of Ayurveda in their everyday lives and also practise physical exercises and yoga regularly.

For his part, Minister Balgobin recalled that the Ayurvedic and Other Traditional Medicines Act 1989 was amended in June 2022 during the Finance Bill to include the terms AYUSH, meaning Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy Systems of Medicine.

He also spoke of new business opportunities in Ayurveda and the development of the sector which is gaining momentum worldwide. As for Minister Maudhoo, he indicated that India’s most precious and enduring contribution to the world is Ayurvedic knowledge whose benefits are recognised by the World Health Organization.

“It teaches us the need for a sound balance in our body, mind and soul and the importance of traditional and medicinal plants”, he said.

The Deputy Indian High Commissioner lauded the initiative of the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Association of Ayurvedic Physicians which attaches high importance to Ayurveda.

It is essential to create awareness on Ayurveda and its benefits to healthcare, he stressed. This event, he stated, further highlights the long-lasting friendship and the deep-rooted ties shared by India and Mauritius since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
