Recreational Day organised for welfare of senior citizens at Anse La Raie

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Recreational Day for Senior Citizens, aiming to provide an opportunity for the elderly to enjoy pleasurable activities, was organised, today, at the Anse La Raie Youth Training Centre.

An initiative of the Social Welfare Division, of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare in collaboration with the Rivière du Rempart Social Welfare Centre and other Social Welfare Centres of the northern region, in the context of the International Day of Older Persons, observed on annually 1st October.

Present at the event, the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, stated that it was important to kickstart activities for the well-being of senior citizens after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is a way to bring elderly persons together to spend a pleasant time with their friends, she added. The Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to provide adequate support and facilities for the welfare of the elderly in the country.

Some of the governmental initiatives, she said, include the increased in old-age pension, the provision of COVID-19 and anti-influenza vaccines. She also dwelt on the pivotal role played by the elderly while recalling their sacrifices and hardships to contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.

On the occasion, several fun game activities such as musical chair, musical hat, spoon race, filling bottles, walking competition were organised for the elderly persons. Gifts were remitted to the best performances.
