Outgoing UN Resident Coordinator deems Mauritius a resilient nation

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Christine N. Umutoni, paid a farewell call, this afternoon, on the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the New Treasury Building, in Port Louis.

In a statement, after the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator affirmed that her impression of Mauritius, as she ended her nearly five years of tenure, is that of a resilient nation that has managed to bounce back irrespective of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the grounding of the Wakashio, and now the crises of high prices.

Looking forward, Ms Umutoni underlined that these lessons learnt in managing crises should be use to tackle development and prepare for any emergency. As the world has recurring emergencies, she stated her belief that the country will have plans in the future to deal with these crises.

According to the UN Resident Coordination, her tenure had been five years of fulfilment with the signature, among others, of a cooperation framework between the UN and the Government of Mauritius in 2019.

“We have been implementing this framework touching on the economy, the social sector, health, climate change and many other areas such as youth and women empowerment,” she underlined.

Moreover, Ms Umutoni was of the view that that it was now the right time for the country to come back on track for long-term planning on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“There is a lot to do as we have lost track a bit on the SDGs because of the emergencies, redirecting resources to these crises,” she indicated.

The UN Resident Coordinator also reiterated the commitment of the UN to work along with the Government of Mauritius and support its agenda for sustainable development.
