Africa-Press – Mauritius. In the context of the World Tsunami Awareness Day observed annually 05 November, a symbolic march was held on Saturday 05 November 2022 at Quatre-Soeurs.
It was an initiative of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
The aim was to raise public awareness of the risk caused by tsunamis and to enhance tsunami preparedness and countermeasures. It was also an opportunity for the citizens to learn more about tsunami or other hazard evacuation route, other coastal risks and in cases of emergency.
Several representatives of the UNDRR, and from Mauritius, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles and Mozambique, participated in the march. In addition, a technical workshop regrouping these participants was also held on 03 and 04 November 2022. World Tsunami Awareness Day
It is recalled that in December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 05 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day, calling on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction.
This year marks the seventh edition of Day and the seventh year of the Sendai Seven Campaign, an advocacy initiative to encourage implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction with the goal of saving lives, reducing disaster losses and improving management of disaster risk.
