Skill Development Programme: Certificates awarded to thirty-three children

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Thirty-three children were awarded certificates for having successfully completed a training programme on Skill Development for shelter residents, today, at the National Women Development Centre in Phoenix.

The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, the Chairperson of the National Children’s Council, and other personalities were present at the award ceremony.

In her address, Minister Koonjoo-Shah congratulated the children for having completed their training while highlighting that it will enable them to further develop their talents and acquire new skills.

She highlighted that children placed in residential care usually find it difficult to adapt and integrate in the society. The challenge, therefore, is to prepare these children so as to reintegrate mainstream society as they move from adolescence to adulthood, she pointed out. The Minister made an appeal to these children to take advantage of the numerous facilities put at their disposal.

The objectives of the training are to advocate learning, training and development of teenagers in residential care institutions; expedite acquisition of technical and vocational knowledge, skills and abilities required for effecting job performance; provide career growth opportunities; and facilitate job placement. Under this programme, ten trainees followed courses in food preparation and twenty-three in advanced eye make up.
