Africa-Press – Mauritius. The swearing-in ceremony of 45 Prospective Barristers was held, this afternoon, at the New Supreme Court Building, in Port Louis, in the presence of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Mauritius, Mrs Rehana Bibi Mungly-Gulbul, and several other personalities.
In her address, the Chief Justice commended the new Barristers for their well-deserved success following their hard work and sacrifice, and wished them a successful career.
She pointed out that their admission to the Bar marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives and that they now form part of a highly respected and noble profession.
This profession, she stressed, has always played a determining role in upholding the rule of law in Mauritius and in fighting for the rights of citizens before our Courts.
Mrs Mungly-Gulbul remarked that, according to the Code of Ethics, a Barrister shall not engage in any conduct which is dishonest or discreditable to him/her, or prejudicial to the administration of justice.
She underlined that Barristers should refrain from engaging in any conduct that may diminish public confidence in the legal profession, and urged them to be guided by principles such as honesty, integrity and strict compliance with the highest professional norms both in and out of Court.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice underscored the need for Barristers to display a high standard of skills as well as a sound knowledge of the complexities of the law so as to be able to practice at the Bar.
She remarked that the practice of law in Mauritius has not only become more complex, but also more competitive with a larger number of new Barristers joining the Bar over the recent years.
In addition, she stated that, as a new generation, the Prospective Barristers represent the future. ‘We look forward to them with hope, faith and confidence for maintaining and enhancing the values which they have inherited by joining the Bar’, she added.
