Africa-Press – Mauritius. You have taken initiatives concerning human resources at Air Mauritius since you were appointed chairman. Can you tell us about them? In fact, we (the board of mangement) have been proactive without the legislation of the government to implement the Equal Opportunities Act.
We have adopted this issue in our politics of recruitment, promotion and transfer of employees. And what is the Equal Opportunities Act all about? The Equal Opportunities Act means that whoever applies for a job at Air Mauritius or for a promotion within the organization, will be judged according to his/her merits and qualifications.
In other words, any applicant will not be judged according to his/her sex, the community he/she belongs to and, above all, his/her political preferences. Hence, each applicant will have the same opportunities as any other applicant.
And when did this act become really official? It was applied following the first meeting of the new management board, which I have been chairing, more precisely since October last year.
And we applied it soon after for the recruitment of the chief executive of Human Resources at Air Mauritius. Have you done an appraisal so far to see how efficient this act is? Well, I have no doubt that it was welcomed by everyone.
In fact, I have received a certain feedback that shows how much people appreciate this initiative. Then, it was well received by applicants. They feel more secure as they see that this new method of recruitment is more transparent.
Do you personally think that other organizations or firms in Mauritius should adopt the Equal Opportunities Act? I am not here to give lessons to anyone.
However, I would say that an enterprise has a lot to gain by applying such a concept. It can help create a feeling of security inside and outside the organization.
Besides, it can have other positive effects on the long-term future of the company such as the financial report, because the investor might feel more willing to trust the company.
Taking into account that the Equal Opportunities Act has been successful, do you think this will encourage your management board to come up with other concepts? As the president of this management board, I am now trying to find other methods that would help us give more responsibilities to the directors at Air Mauritius without restricting their freedom. We do not want to hinder them from giving their best to the company.
