Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Media Trust is hosting, today, a one-day workshop for journalists on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, in Port Louis, with the aim of familiarising the local press representatives with different areas related to climate change by technical experts. Some 15 participants are attending the workshop.
In his opening address, Mr Taluck Beeharry, board member of the Media Trust, highlighted that this training session is the third one organised by the Media Trust concerning environmental issues. The two previous workshops focused on Ecosystems, Environment and Sustainable Development, held in 2020, and on Impacts of Chemicals and Environmental Pollutants, in 2019.
He pointed out that the workshop is being organised with the collaboration of independent and private sector stakeholders and expressed hope that participants acquire the necessary skills and tools so as to effectively report on subjects related to climate change.
Resource persons are: Mrs Gina Bonne from the Indian Ocean Commission; Mr Berty Malabar from BEM Recycling Ltd; Mr Sajjid Mooniaruck from the United Nations Development Programme; Dr Anand Sookun from Soft Sustainable Services; and Mr Shailand Gunnoo, an individual consultant.
The themes to be covered during the one-day training are green recovery, circular economy, renewable energy, impacts of climate change, and multilateral environmental agreements and international commitments on climate change.
It is recalled that climate change is one of the main environmental challenges that the world currently faces. Both human and natural activities are responsible for climate change whereby its effects are witnessed at local, regional and global levels. Some of these effects are long-term ones, for instance, global warming, while other ones, like flash floods, are short term but severe in intensity.
Climate change has various socio-economic impacts on key sectors such as agriculture and farming, transportation, health care, manufacturing and hospitality. In response, Governments across the world are called upon to implement adaptation plans and mitigation measures for protecting their populations especially vulnerable communities. This is achieved with the support and collaboration of international institutions, the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations, academia and other stakeholders.
