Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, officially launched, today, the National Science Week (NSW) 2023, at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) in Bell Village.

The High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs K. Nandini Singla, the Chairperson of the RGSC, Mrs Ellora Dhunnoo, and other personalities were also present at the launching ceremony. In her address, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun highlighted that science has a major role to play in people’s lives and the economy of a country.

She thus underlined the need to raise awareness and encourage the youth to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with a view to explore new opportunities in this field.

The Vice-Prime Minister pointed out that her Ministry is ensuring that new platforms are provided to the youth, such as workshops on coding which are being carried out at primary level.

She also stressed on the need to constantly expose children to science so that they develop a passion for the subject. Furthermore, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun observed that artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, and robotics are the new trends.

These, she nonetheless conceded, can have dire consequences if they are misused. She therefore appealed to students to make judicious use of science and technologies, and contribute to take the country to the next level of development.

As for High Commissioner Singla, she spoke of the longstanding strong bilateral relationship between India and Mauritius. She also reiterated India’s support to Mauritius in promoting science, technology, and innovation in all spheres of society.

For her part, Mrs Dhunnoo, reiterated the vision of the RGSC to be a centre of excellence. She encouraged the youth to opt for STEM and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. On this occasion, an award ceremony was also organised for the winners of the National Mathematics Contest 2023, held in the context of the NSW.

Mr Saravanan Mooneesawmy (St Esprit College) won the first prize; the first runner up was Ms Danisha Devi Beedassy (Hindu Girl’s College); and Mr Hitesh Bhagloo (St Esprit College) bagged the third prize. National Science Week 2023
