United Nations Resident Coordinator meets Minister Koonjoo-Shah

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles, Mrs Lisa Simrique Singh, called on the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, today, at the Newton Tower in Port Louis.

The United Nations Population Fund Representative, Mrs Priscilla Li Ying was also present on this occasion. During the meeting, Minister Koonjoo-Shah recalled that her Ministry undertook a study to determine the progress made by women entrepreneurs in Mauritius and determine what can be done so as to further empower them.

She dwelt on the Gender Equality Bill and pointed out that in depth consultations are ongoing with various stakeholders. She also stressed that Rodrigues is included in all her Ministry’s endeavours as far as women are concerned and underlined the growing collaboration between Mauritius and Rodrigues.

As for the UN Resident Coordinator, she reassured that her organisation will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare so as to further empower women both in Mauritius and Rodrigues. She also emphasised on the need to invest more as far as some families are concerned.

For her part, Mrs Li Ying informed that the United Nations Population Fund will further support the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare and indicated that emphasis should be laid on women’s rights and benefits.
