Africa-Press – Mauritius. In the context of the “Warm Children’s Hearts” initiative which is a China-Africa join action to promote the well-being of orphans, food packs donated by the People’s Republic of China, were distributed to NGOs in charge of shelters for orphans and vulnerable children during a ceremony held, today at the National Empowerment Foundation, in Port Louis.

The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo; the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Liying Zhu; the First Lady, Mrs Sayukta Roopun; and other personalities were present on the occasion.

In her address, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo highlighted the different support programmes extended by the People’s Republic of China to help vulnerable children and orphans in Mauritius to fight hunger and poverty.

The numerous treaties and agreements between the two countries is clear evidence of the continuous assistance of the People’s Republic of China to Mauritius and the African countries, she said. Similar actions, she underlined, have been witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic through multiple donations to vulnerable families in Mauritius.

The People’s Republic of China, she indicated, also caters to the emotional, physical, and mental well-being of vulnerable children and has provided financial assistance for the organisation of recreational activities.

The Minister extended her heartfelt thanks to the People’s Republic of China for its continuous support in helping vulnerable families and children which has resulted in achieving a more equitable and inclusive society.

She observed that the ties between Mauritius and China have strengthened over the years adding that both countries will continue to work for the welfare of Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China and their people.

Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo further spoke of Governmental measures to help the vulnerable including the increase in the pension for the elderly, handicapped, vulnerable families, people suffering from comorbidities, and orphans as well as ensuring that orphans and children from vulnerable families get access to education and school materials.

She reaffirmed Government’s commitment to continue to come up with new measures and additional finance to cater to the needy ones while enhancing their quality of life.

For his part, the Chinese Ambassador underlined the longstanding friendship that exists between the two countries while highlighting that Mauritius and China have recently celebrated 50 years of diplomatic ties.

The People’s Republic of China looks forward to work closely with Mauritius to enhance the traditional friendship between the two countries, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote shared development, he added.

Speaking about the Free Trade Agreement between Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China, he said that it is expected to improve the well-being of the peoples of the two countries.
