Budget 2023-2024 puts forth continued development of youth and sports

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The development of the youth and sports is essential to the well-being of the society, highlighted the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, this evening, during his budgetary announcements at the National Assembly in Port Louis.

To continuously invest to support locale athletes, budget 2023-2024 allocates Rs 53 million for the participation of some 450 athletes in the Indian Ocean Island Games 2023.

Athletes will be provided with the necessary resource in view of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games as follows: A monthly allowance of Rs 30,000 to 10 high level athletes over a one-year period to prepare for the Games;

A special cash prize of Rs 1 million for gold, Rs 700,000 for silver, and Rs 500,000 for bronze medalists. Another budgetary measure includes the allowance to some 110 high-level athletes to reinstate to pre-pandemic levels as from 2022.

This year, the allowance will be further increased by 15 %. The budget also makes provision of Rs 1 million to the Mauritius Scouts Association to support some 40 participants from scout clubs across the country to represent Mauritius at the 25th World Scout Jamboree 2023.

Other key measures for the youth include: A one-off grant of Rs 10,000 will be provided to registered Youth Clubs. The National Youth Council will further upgrade six Youth Centres at Bambous, Barkly, Chemin Grenier, Flacq, Pamplemousses, and Rivière du Rempart. Provision of Rs 20 million to the Mauritius Recreation Council for the organisation of recreational activities across the country.

In a bid to upgrade the sports infrastructure across Mauritius, several key measures were elaborated comprising the Souvenir Swimming pool at Calebasses; the Serge Alfred Swimming Pool at Beau Bassin; the National Badminton Centre at Rose-Hill; the Daniel Imbert Sports Complex at La Source; and the Athletic Track at the Rose-Belle Stadium. Budget 2023-2024 will also cater for the construction of three new swimming pools in Curepipe, Flacq, and Rivière des Anguilles.
