The Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, handed over, today in Phoenix during an official ceremony, air tickets to the Mauritian Nominee of the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, to be held in Germany from 25 to 30 June 2023.
Senior officials of the Ministry and other personalities were present on this occasion. In her address, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun highlighted that Miss Annaëlle Kate Siaw Lim Hip Kam, who has been nominated to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2023, is currently a PhD student at the University of Mauritius in the field of Molecular Nutrition.
She pointed out that, every year, there are young researchers and scientists who are given the opportunity to meet with Nobel Prize Winners so as to discuss important issues in science.
The VPM commended Miss Hip Kam for her nomination and expressed hope that the latter will be able to share her experiences with other researchers and students once she returns from the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.
She further remarked that Mauritius started participating in the Meeting in 2012, while some 30 Mauritians have been selected to participate in this event to date.
Moreover, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun underlined that her Ministry is engaged to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in Mauritius in order to involve more young people in this line of study.
She also indicated that the Ministry, through its endeavours, hopes to foster scientific research and exchange of good practices among the youth. As for Miss Hip Kam, she expressed gratitude for her nomination to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2023 and represent Mauritius at the event.
She outlined her commitment to share her experience with her peers once she is back to Mauritius. Miss Hip Kam also seized this opportunity to share her current research on the pharmacological potential of locally grown food against cancer.
It is recalled that the next Lindau Meeting will be dedicated to Physiology and Medicine, and around 40 Nobel Laureates from this field will contribute to a versatile programme in Lindau.
Some 635 young scientists from around the world received their invitation to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2023. They will have the opportunity to listen to lectures, Agora Talks, panel discussions as well as enjoy personal exchange with the Nobel Laureates and the other young scientists.
