Africa-Press – Mauritius. The ground breaking ceremony for the construction of 400 housing units at L’espérance Trébuchet, estimated to the tune of Rs 1 billion, was held, yesterday, in presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo.

The Attorney-General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, Members of the Parliament, Mr Sharvanand Ramkaun and Rajanah Ravi Dhaliah and other personalities were present

The housing project, on around 20 arpents, will comprise 480 parking space, a multipurpose hall, a market, a children’s playground, a commercial area, an area reserved for sports amenities, pedestrian crossings, a jogging track, solar street lightings, eco bins, a retention pond area, road infrastructure and a pétanque court.

Each housing unit will comprise two bedrooms, a living room, a study, a kitchen, a sceptic tank, solar and water harvesting systems, a parking and a garden. The project also provides for 16 ground floor houses for disabled persons equipped with a ramp and necessary facilities.

In a statement, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the housing project is being developed in harmony with nature, equipped with modern infrastructure and facilities.

The project, he stated, will benefit the residents of the district adding that similar housing projects are being carried out in different regions of the country to ensure that citizens have access to decent housing facilities.

A total of 10% of the housing units will be reserved for vulnerable families registered at the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, he pointed out.

Mr Obeegadoo further underlined that the construction of the 400 housing units forms part of Government’s vison to construct 8 000 housing units in the next 18 months. He indicated that 39 sites have been identified and that the contracts for 32 sites have already been allocated.
