Mauritius Telecom (MT) has embarked on a new era of connectivity with the launch of 1 Gbps broadband plan by the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, in presence of the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin, and the Chief Executive Office of MT, Mr Sherry Singh, this evening at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre in Pailles.
MT is providing discounted offers of up to 50% on my. t Home Internet and TV for 100 Mbps and 50 Mbps, and TV channels starting as from Rs 50. The 500 Mbps was also launched.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of reliable and high speed internet connection for households in an era where digital media is embedded in daily lives. He encouraged with enthusiasm the new TV and fibre internet offers of MT as users will benefit from faster and cheaper broadband.
Prime Minister Jugnauth announced that in Government’s endeavours to create a paperless environment, documents such as birth and marriage certificates, driving licences, academic certificates, utility bills will soon be made available on the MoKloud digital platform.
The digital vaccination pass, he pointed out, will become a reality and the beSafeMoris platform will become a product of MoKloud whereby each citizen will be able to keep a digital version of personal documents including digital vaccination pass and present them to authorities for verification.
Speaking on the importance of emerging technologies for innovative solutions, he indicated that Government has introduced the Mauritius Emerging Technologies Act for the setting up of a council to spearhead the adoption of emerging technologies. Prime Minister Jugnauth further dwelt on the various technological progress in the country.
They comprise the provision of optical fibre to households, increased bandwidth enabling the diversification of the digital industry sector, the introduction of 5G in July 2021 available at Réduit, Bagatelle and Trianon and Ebene and to be eventually extended across the country.
The country’s fourth submarine cable which will be operational by MT by 2022 and 2023 will help improve international connectivity for conducting transactions and businesses online, he added.
He reiterated that Government will not stop on its journey to digital highway while adding that the country needs to ensure that we keep pace with the global transformation of the technological arena.
“We have to meet the growing bandwidth needs of the country and accelerate the emergence of innovative internet applications for the benefit of citizens, businesses and economy at large” he said adding that “Mauritius Telecom will stand as a key player in providing sustainable networks and avant-garde services to keep us at par with the global trend in technology”.
In a statement to the press, Minister Balgobin pointed out that the MoKloud platform will be launched next week and this will enable citizens to download birth certificate for free and also indicated that works are underway for the implementation of the digital vaccination pass.
For his part, Mr Sherry Singh explained that the aim of these facilities put in place by MT is “to take our country into a new league, the premier league of countries with best and fastest internet”and to respond to the needs of citizens.
