Dr Husnoo also saluted the Mauritius Islamic Mission, created in 1962, for their mission in supporting the poor and in caring for the welfare and rehabilitation of people with disabilities.

“Currently, the Association caters for some 19 students with special needs providing them with basic education, medical facilities, and psychological help,” he said.

He also highlighted the way digital technologies had revolutionise the world by facilitating communication and interaction, especially for people with disabilities.

Thus, the Vice-Prime Minister informed that the seven tablet PCs and Wi-Fi amplifier given by the ICTA will enable the Mauritius Islamic Mission to initiate the children with special needs to ICT.

Dr Husnoo pointed out that the use of digital equipment would enhance the independence of persons with disabilities and their integration into society.

For his part, the Chairman of the ICTA Board highlighted the importance of ICT in a rapidly evolving world. He elaborated on the increase in the number of internet and mobile subscriptions that had currently reached 1.9 million and 2 million respectively.

He underscored the upcoming mandatory re-registration of SIM Cards by April 2024 in line with the recommendations of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Drug Trafficking, chaired by Former Judge P. Lam Shang Leen, published in 2018.

Moreover, Mr Ng Sui Wa welcomed the opportunity given to ICTA to put ICT to good use by facilitating its access to disabled persons while supporting and improving children’s learning abilities and increasing their knowledge.

He mentioned that ICTA had already made several donations of ICT equipment since 2021 to non-governmental organisations and civil society associations.

The Chairman stated that the ICTA would respond to the call of the Mauritius Islamic Mission for rapid internet services as the Authority was currently undertaking the setting up of 234 Wi-Fi hotspots across the Republic of Mauritius.
