Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, participated, yesterday, in the United Nations (UN) 2023 Summit on Climate Ambition aiming to ensure collective effort towards a more equitable renewable-energy based and climate-resilient global economy, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Summit, chaired by the UN Secretary General, Mr Antonio Guterres, provided an opportunity to review the latest scientific data on the impact of climate change, showcase global best practices in adaptation to climate change and accelerate urgent action.
In his address, Mr Guterres affirmed that the effects of climate change are already being felt in many countries around the world and that it is imperative to undertake urgent actions to contain CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.
He, thus, called for immediate and sustained efforts over the next three decades in view to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
The UN, he stated, recognises that countries who contribute the least to global warming are the first to feel the harmful effects of the climate crisis, hence the need to implement effective adaptation strategies to compensate these nations for losses and damage. Governments and international financial institutions must act promptly to ensure climate justice, he stressed.
