Africa-Press – Mauritius. A site visit was effected by the Minister of Agro Industry and Food Industry, Mr Teeruthraj Hurdoyal, at the Agricultural Mechanisation Unit of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority (MCIA) in presence of the CEO of MCIA, Mr Satish Purmessur, yesterday, in Plaine Lauzun.

On the same occasion, two tractors were acquired by the MCIA to help the farmers’ community. The Minister pointed out that these Japanese tractors of prototype D6, to the tune of Rs16 million each, will help in meeting the demand of small planters and ensure a more effective and rapid service.

He added that these machines are meticulously designed to cater for the comfort and security of the user. He recalled that two similar other tractors have already been put into use last week at Beau Champs and that the Ministry is working for the welfare of small planters through this initiative.

Mr Hurdoyal stressed on the need of providing adequate training to the employees to ensure smooth running of the mechanism. He appealed to the MCIA to maintain a stock of spare parts of these equipments so that there is no hindrance in the productivity.

He also spoke of a fast-track mechanism to import the spare parts. For his part, Mr Purmessur elaborated on this initiative aiming to act as a catalyst for the welfare of small planters.

He further, announced the acquisition of two new harvestors in the coming fortnight. The MCIA was established as a body corporate on 15December 2011 and came into force by proclamation on 19 March 2012.

Its objective is to ensure that essential services are available to planters. The MCIA provides technical advice, assistance and training to planters on cane cultivation, harvesting and transport of cane and post- harvest operations.
