Africa-Press – Mauritius. As part of the ongoing collaboration between the Mauritius Prison Service and the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, embellishment works were carried out by four inmates from Richelieu Open Prison, during five days, under the Pay Back Mauritius Scheme, to restore the memorial monument for fishermen lost at sea in Le Morne.
A site visit was effected on Friday 17 November 2023 by Officers of the Mauritius Prison Service and the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping to assess the work progress.
The Pay Back Mauritius Scheme allows detainees to repay their debt for the crime they have committed and at the same time develop new skills which will help them integrate into society.
Under the project, several Memoranda of Understanding have been signed by the Mauritius Prison Service with relevant authorities whereby prisoners who have almost reached the end of their sentences are tasked with cleaning out public beaches, and undertaking the associated renovations and repair works.
Thus, the Mauritius Prison Service and the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources signed a Memorandum of Understanding to that effect last year. The Mauritius Prison Service is providing the manpower to effectuate restorative and embellishment works in the community while the Ministry meets the relevant cost and furnishes the materials and required amenities.
