Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Christmas party, organised by the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Light of Hope for some 500 children from 18 shelters across Mauritius, was held, today, at the State House in Réduit. This annual event, now in its eighth year, provided a day brimming with activities created to delight and entertain the children.
The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the First Lady, Mrs Sayukta Roopun; the President of Light of Hope, Mr Mevin Munisamy; and other personalities attended the event.
In his address, President Roopun commended the efforts of Light of Hope in organising such events that create a vibrant atmosphere for the children. Acknowledging the collective support from various sectors and NGOs, he emphasised the embodiment of compassion, solidarity, and empathy by these organisations.
He thus underscored the importance of nurturing children from an early age, which according to him, is a responsibility shared among parents, teachers, NGOs, and Government.
Balancing academics, extracurriculars, sports, and volunteering is crucial in shaping well-rounded individuals, while inculcating good values to children is a shared responsibility for all, he pointed out. Furthermore, President Roopun highlighted Government’s steadfast commitment to children’s education.
He recalled the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science, and Technology’s initiative to grant free pre-primary education to all, which bears testimony to its core objectives of inclusivity and ensuring access to education for every child.
Speaking about the essence of Christmas, beyond mere gift-giving, President Roopun remarked that it is a national event transcending religious boundaries, and urged for reconciliation, solidarity, and sharing.
He also seized this opportunity to express his vision for 2024, advocating for progress and unity to sustain Mauritius’ growth and prosperity. He moreover appealed to every citizen to work collectively towards a brighter future to ensure the nation’s progress.
