Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mauritius’ New Democrats (ND) party marked its first anniversary with a “Foundation Day” workshop on April 18th at the Labourdonnais Hotel. Over 100 participants from diverse sectors of society engaged in discussions focused on five key themes, the results of which will be compiled into a document for the party’s forthcoming website.
Party leadership, including Secretary General Zapheer Futloo, President Véronique Leu-Govind, and Leader Kushal Lobine, addressed the attendees, emphasizing continued commitment to their political goals. Alliance of Change spokesperson Richard Duval, affiliated with the ND party, was unable to attend.
Several committees were established during the workshop, addressing issues such as youth and women’s engagement, environmental protection, digital transformation, economic opportunity, democratic principles, justice, urban and rural development, foreign affairs, and social integration.
The party unveiled its logo, “the tree of democracy,” symbolizing deep roots and enduring strength. The ND party has set its sights on promoting democracy, ecology, and meritocracy by 2030. A key differentiator for the party is its shared responsibility model, inspired by Scandinavian collaborative approaches, which contrasts with traditional hierarchical structures.
In its first year, the ND party has achieved significant milestones, including electing three MPs and appointing a minister and a junior minister. The party is also rapidly growing, with an average of 40 new members joining weekly, and is optimistic about securing additional representation in upcoming municipal elections.
