Africa-Press – Mauritius. ‘Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) is the father of the modern Mauritius and of our economic development.
As the builder of a modern country, and working to bring together the people of the country, we will remember his determination, tenacity, his will to act, and his strong leadership’.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo made this statement this evening at the National Assembly in Port-Louis, during the special session held to honour late Sir Anerood Jugnauth, former Prime Minister and former President of the Republic of Mauritius.
The DPM pointed out that SAJ is among those along with Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Charles Gaëtan Duval who embody the great struggles of their time and who have changed the course of history.
SAJ, according to the DPM, has never lost his proximity with the people, his outspokenness and his simplicity despite all the honors he has been given.
He thus praised the patriotism of SAJ, whom he described as a great patriot, who promoted the spirit of Mauritian identity and who supported and prepared the independence of our homeland.
Mr Obeegadoo also spoke of SAJ as an activist, who as a Prime Minister began a fight against the remnants of colonialism which allowed the country’s accession to the status of a Republic and an activist who fiercely defended the integrity of our territory until the recognition by the international court of justice of the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago in 2017 which led to a victory at the United Nations General Assembly.
He hailed SAJ as the father of economic development, economic miracle, industrialisation and reformer of the country. SAJ, he emphasised, has promoted gender equality in the law, the success of the great educational reform, the autonomy of Rodrigues, among others. SAJ now belongs to the Republic of Mauritius, and to the entire nation of Mauritius, he concluded.
