Africa-Press – Mauritius. Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella,, will be credited if Chelsea meets their goal of making it to the Champions League the following season.
The resilient, bushy-haired Spaniard came up to score a crucial goal once more as the Londoners defeated Manchester United 1-0 on Friday, putting them in the running to rejoin Europe’s top league.
The two Chelsea wing backs collaborated to breach United’s defence in the 71st minute, with Cucurella scoring a header past Andre Onana after latching onto a flawless cross from Reece James.
With just one game left in the season, the goal calmed the home team’s players and fans who had been worried about Chelsea losing their place among the top five Champions League qualifying berths in the Premier League.
In a similar vein, Cucurella, 26, started the scoring in a 2-1 victory over Brentford in December, put the Blues on course to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, and scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Leicester City in March.
In February, he was also one of the goal scorers in a 4-0 thumping of Southampton.
At the conclusion of Friday’s match against United, he was being serenaded by the Stamford Bridge crowd with cries of “Cu-cu-rella” set to the melody of the traditional song “La Bamba” from Mexico.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca commended his left defender for his timing skills and the philosophy of play he picked up from Barcelona’s academy.
