Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced a 45% increase in prize money ahead of the start of the 2024 Total Energies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Morocco will host the competition from July 5-26th in five different cities. The increase was announced on Thursday with the winners now set to walk away with USD1,000,000, a 100% increase, while the runners-up pocket USD500,000. Previously the winners would take USD500,000 and runners-up USD300,000.
The third placed team will now take USD350,000, the fourth placed USD300,000, while the four teams knocked out at the quarter stage take USD200,000 each. All the team taking part in the competition will walk away with some cash as the 3rd placed teams in each group will take USD150,000 and the 4th placed USD125,000.
“CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of Women’s Football in Africa,” says Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President.
Hosts Morocco will kick-start the campaign with a Group A match against Zambia. Tanzania are the only team from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zone that qualified for WAFCON 2024.
Group A: Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, DR Congo
Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Botswana
Group C: South Africa, Ghana, Mali, Tanzania
