Africa-Press – Mauritius. Cristiano Ronaldo recently made headlines with a bold claim that the Saudi Pro League is now among the top five leagues in the world. But Riyad Mahrez, one of the league’s high-profile stars, has offered a more grounded perspective.
In a candid response, the Algerian winger—now with Al-Ahli after a trophy-laden spell at Manchester City—shared his thoughts on the league’s status and potential.
“I don’t agree with him,” Mahrez said. “The top five leagues are still the best, but we’re not far behind them.”
While Ronaldo’s comment stirred debate, Mahrez’s viewpoint reflects a growing realism among players who joined the Saudi football project in its early stages. Rather than immediately chasing prestige, Mahrez believes in laying a strong foundation.
“The goal isn’t for the league to be among the best in the world overnight, but rather a long-term vision,” he explained. “Players like me, who came in at the beginning, are like pioneers and are helping to make the league stronger, and it is already evolving.”
Mahrez acknowledges the rapid improvements being made—facilities, professionalism, fan engagement—and credits Saudi officials for their ambition.
“They are trying to achieve this goal,” he added. “And I believe they will succeed.”
As one of the early European stars to embrace the Saudi challenge, Mahrez continues to play a vital role both on and off the pitch—bringing experience, class, and a sense of purpose to a league that’s determined to rise, one season at a time.
