Africa-Press – Mauritius. Members of the Mauritian diaspora in Canada will organize a demonstration on Saturday August 29, at 2 p. m. , at Place de la Celebration, in the city of Mississauga, in solidarity with their fellow citizens in Mauritius in the wake of the ecological disaster caused by the sinking of the bulk carrier Wakashio off the south-eastern coast of the country.

Since their compatriots in Mauritius will hold a peaceful march in Port-Louis on the same day to express their reactions and demands, the Mauritians established in Canada did not want to remain on the sidelines of this event during these difficult times in their native country.

They wish to show their solidarity while drawing the attention of the Canadian public to the ecological disaster suffered by a small island state in the southwest of the Indian Ocean – where maritime traffic passes between Asia and the countries of the Atlantic – because of the navigation error of the ship’s captain.

They have followed with particular interest the development of the ecological disaster which has made international headlines since the sinking of the ship on July 27.

With fond memories of their native island, members of the diaspora keep close ties with the country through their regular visits. They have always been proud of their native country, whose tourist charms they praise to their Canadian neighbors and friends.

Today, they are sad to see the aftermath of the shipwreck, including the oil spill that soiled the shore and lagoons, killing marine life in this exotic part of the island.

They have a special thought for all those who have been affected, including fishermen, boaters, hoteliers, restaurateurs and innkeepers, and other small traders in the South East region.

The Mauritian diaspora protest is organized under the auspices of the Association of Mauritians of Toronto in collaboration with associations based in other cities.

The diaspora is scattered across Canada but is concentrated in large cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax, etc.

The diaspora wants to make its modest contribution to raising international awareness of the risk of shipwrecks and the spillage of heavy toxic oils in the territorial waters of Mauritius and the countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
