Africa-Press – Mauritius. The road from Riche Terre Roundabout to Jumbo Roundabout on Motorway M2 and along B33 has reopened to traffic, following the construction of a box culvert and the completion of other associated works. The road closure was in effect from February 2021 till now.

The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, and other personalities, were on site in Riche Terre, this morning, to take cognizance of the infrastructure enhancements that would benefit inhabitants and industries in the region as well as customers of Riche Terre Mall.

In a statement, Minister Hurreeram explained that the bridge deck area was expanded from 7m2 to 15m2, thereby increasing the hydraulic capacity of the bridge.

This measure would minimise the occurrence of flooding in the nearby regions of Riche Terre, Cité Roma, Kestrel Lane of Terre-Rouge, among others, he underlined.

According to the Minister, the project was part of a series of works undertaken in the context of infrastructure resilience with a view to mitigating the impacts of climate change, in light of the frequency of extreme events such as flash floods.

Government is committed to protect the population from the effects of climate change while the Road Development Authority, the Land Drainage Authority and the Ministry of National Infrastructure and Community Development will carry the required works in the interest of the population, affirmed Mr Hurreeram.

The construction of a culvert at Riche Terre along B33 was to the tune of some Rs 14,9 million. It comprised the demolition of the existing bridge; construction of the new culvert and of wing walls; river dredging; placing of drains, metal grating, footpath, kerbs, handrails; and the relocation of existing utilities networks. Asphalt and landscaping work together with road markings and furniture were executed.
